DOE Closes $1.9 Billion Loan to Restart Duane Arnold Nuclear Plant in Iowa

The U.S. Department of Energy has closed a $1.9 billion loan to NextEra Energy to restart the Duane Arnold nuclear plant in Iowa. The 615 MW facility shut down in 2026 and will require NRC relicensing before returning to service, expected by 2029. Google committed to a 25-year power purchase agreement to supply its Iowa data centers, underpinning the project's financial case. The restart will create around 1,500 construction jobs and 450 permanent operations roles.
