Doosan Enerbility, a South Korean conglomerate, has secured a supply agreement with U.S. small modular reactor (SMR) developer NuScale Power. The deal covers manufacturing and delivery of components for NuScale's reactor modules. No financial terms or timeline were disclosed in the announcement.

Where this fits

This is a data point in the global race to deploy firm, low-emission generation capacity at scale. NuScale's SMRs are designed to provide dispatchable baseload power with near-zero lifecycle emissions. The deal shows that the technological and manufacturing pathway for firm nuclear generation is maturing outside China's supply chain, unlike solar panels, batteries, and inverters, where Chinese manufacturers dominate upstream processing and hold cost leadership. Australia has banned nuclear generation by law, foreclosing this option entirely while betting the grid's reliability on weather-dependent renewables and gas firming.

What it means

South Korea and the United States are locking in manufacturing partnerships for a generation technology that Australia cannot legally deploy, even as both countries recognise SMRs as critical to decarbonisation and grid security. Australia's renewables-heavy transition will depend on battery storage and gas peaking plants for stability, and on Chinese-owned supply chains for the panels and cells that make up that capacity. The absence of a domestic firm-power option narrows the grid's resilience to supply shock, price volatility, or geopolitical coercion. Meanwhile, the engineering and manufacturing expertise in firm nuclear generation is concentrating outside Australia, in allied nations that retain the policy flexibility to deploy it.
