Deep Fission completes borehole demonstration

Deep Fission has successfully lowered and retrieved a full-scale prototype canister into a 100-foot test borehole using commercial drilling equipment operated by a standard commercial crew. The canister is a non-nuclear replica of the vessel designed to house the Gravity reactor core, a small modular reactor intended for underground placement at depth. The company used existing pressurised-water reactor technology and off-the-shelf drilling rigs, with no custom equipment or new technology required for the emplacement and retrieval sequence that the deployment model depends on.

Where this fits

This demonstration addresses a critical constraint on firm power: deployment speed and supply-chain independence. The Gravity reactor is designed to use proven nuclear technology assembled into a new form factor, lowering the engineering and regulatory risk that has slowed advanced reactor deployment. If the deployment model works at commercial scale, it points toward a way to add firm, dispatchable capacity without the multi-decade lead times and enormous capital concentration of large reactors. Australia's existing ban on nuclear generation means this technology cannot be deployed here, even as the grid increasingly relies on weather-dependent renewables that require either gas firming or vast battery builds dependent on Chinese supply chains.

What it means

For Australia, the significance is inverted. A working deployment model for fast, modular, firm power under existing commercial infrastructure is precisely what the transition needs, yet policy forbids its use. Meanwhile, the renewables-plus-gas path commits Australia to ongoing dependence on Chinese solar, battery and inverter manufacturing, and to decades more gas consumption. A nuclear alternative that could deliver firm power on a compressed timeline and with sovereign manufacturing pathways remains off the table.
