100 community batteries delivered as ARENA funds next generation of projects

ARENA announced the installation of its 100th community battery under its Community Batteries Funding Initiative and committed a further $23.2 million to three new projects in Round 2. The projects will deploy 47 additional community batteries across regional South Australia, New South Wales, Sydney, the Central Coast, Hunter regions, and Newcastle. ARENA framed the milestone as evidence that community batteries are becoming central to helping households extract more value from rooftop solar, storing daytime excess and releasing it when needed, while generating data on performance, costs, business models, and grid impacts.

Where this fits

Community batteries are neighbourhood-scale storage assets. They address a real problem: solar-heavy grids need somewhere to put midday surplus and something to draw on in evening peaks. But the Energy Realism premise hinges on dispatchable backbone generation. Community batteries store energy for hours, not days. They shift surplus within a window but cannot reliably cover multi-day, multi-week low-solar periods that Australian grids will face. Their contribution to whole-system reliability remains limited by duration and scale. The data ARENA is collecting will be valuable, but it should answer whether community batteries reduce or simply defer the need for firming.

What it means

One hundred batteries across a continent of fifteen million households is a pilot scale, not a transition solution. Community batteries may trim peak demand and improve distribution-network efficiency, lowering some network costs. But they cannot substitute for firm capacity. Australia's grid reliability depends on whether we deploy enough dispatchable plant alongside renewables. Community batteries are a complement to that decision, not an alternative to it.
