Western Australia, France Sign Critical Minerals Deal - Mirage News

Western Australia and France have signed a critical minerals deal. The agreement aims to secure supply of minerals essential to energy transition infrastructure: batteries, solar panels, inverters and other components. France, facing its own energy security pressures as it decarbonises, is seeking reliable sources outside China's dominant supply chain.
Where this fits
This deal is an admission that Australia's renewable energy transition runs on a supply chain owned by a strategic rival. Solar panels, lithium-ion batteries, rare earths and processed minerals flow overwhelmingly from China's factories, powered by coal. A renewables-only grid multiplies material intensity: more panels, more batteries, more transmission cable. The deal shows Western Australia recognising the sovereignty problem. But it also shows the problem cannot be solved by swapping one export partner for another. The underlying issue remains: a decarbonised grid built on weather-dependent generation requires vast material throughput, and that throughput is concentrated in Beijing's hands.
What it means
Australia can diversify its critical minerals customers, but not its supply chain vulnerabilities. Any large-scale energy transition that relies on manufactured components, batteries, inverters, panels, runs through China for the foreseeable decade. A nuclear grid, by contrast, is built on uranium enrichment, reactor vessels and fuel management: high-value, low-volume, and within the technical reach of allied nations. France's own energy security rests partly on this difference. The deal with WA is pragmatic. But it does not solve the underlying trade-off: Australia is trading energy independence for energy transition, when the one technology that offers both, firm, low-material, low-emission nuclear power, remains prohibited by law.

The bigger picture
Energy security is national security. This connects to the wider case at Unprepared: Australia's dependence on a strategic rival, and how ready it is for the world that is coming.
