Australian green hydrogen hopeful launches AI-backed electrolyser production line

Hysata, an Australian electrolyser manufacturer, has opened the first phase of HysataFab, a 8500-square-metre production facility in Port Kembla. The federal government is contributing $49 million from the Arena Future Made in Australia Innovation Fund. The company claims efficiency advantages in hydrogen production per megawatt of electricity consumed, and plans to deploy AI monitoring across three production lines to optimise manufacturing. Three production lines will eventually scale to 200 megawatts of electrolyser capacity, positioning it as the largest such facility in the southern hemisphere. An unnamed heavy industry customer is due to receive a large-scale unit in the first half of 2027.
Where this fits
Green hydrogen requires cheap, abundant electricity to be economically viable. That electricity must come from renewables under Australia's net-zero pathway, which means weather-dependent solar and wind generation plus battery storage or gas firming to smooth supply gaps. Hysata's efficiency gain per megawatt reduces the raw electricity demand, but does not solve the underlying problem: hydrogen production will be intermittent unless it runs on firm power, and building enough renewable capacity plus firming to feed an electrolyser fleet adds material cost and China supply-chain exposure that the $49 million subsidy does not quantify.
What it means
Manufacturing capability is valuable, but electrolyser deployment scales only as fast as the grid can feed it reliably and affordably. Australia is betting on a renewable-heavy system with gas as the firming backstop. A firm, low-carbon alternative, nuclear, is prohibited by law. Without it, green hydrogen will remain a niche product for heavy industry willing to pay a price premium, not a mass-market fuel. Hysata's efficiency matters; the grid's inflexibility costs more.
