Community-owned 6.8 MW solar and 10.5 MWh battery mark project completion

A 6.8 MW solar farm with 10.5 MWh of battery storage has been completed near Orange, NSW. The Yiray Clean Energy Park was funded by 128 community co-owners who invested $1.36 million, supplemented by a $3.5 million NSW government grant. The project is expected to generate 13.2 GWh annually, enough to supply about 2,150 homes. It features four containerised battery units and connects to the local grid via Essential Energy's network.

Where this fits

This is a showcase for community renewables, but it exposes a cost and resilience problem at the core of Australia's transition. The battery storage is 10.5 MWh on a 6.8 MW solar farm, a ratio that lasts roughly 90 minutes at full discharge. That is enough to shift a few hours of afternoon load, but not enough to handle multi-day cloud cover or seasonal winter dips. The real cost of grid-wide firming, the gas plants, interconnectors, and vastly larger battery fleets needed to back up a renewables-dominant grid, remains hidden in electricity price signals and government grants, not visible on a community balance sheet.

What it means

Distributed solar with short-duration storage suits local load-shifting and community engagement, but it does not solve the firm-power problem. Australia is building a grid that remains dependent on gas for weather events lasting days, while the alternative, firm, energy-dense nuclear power, remains legislatively forbidden. Community projects like this are real and valuable; they are not, however, a substitute for the dispatchable backbone a reliable, affordable electricity system requires.
