Community-owned 6.8 MW solar and 10.5 MWh battery mark project completion

A 6.8 MW solar farm with 10.5 MWh of co-located battery storage has been completed near Orange, NSW. The Yiray Clean Energy Park was funded by 128 community investors who contributed $1.36 million, plus a $3.5 million grant from the NSW government's Regional Community Energy Fund. EDP APAC developed the project in partnership with the Energy Democracy Central West co-operative. The facility is expected to generate 13.2 GWh annually, serving about 2,150 homes.

Where this fits

This project illustrates a cost and reliability tension at the heart of Australia's energy transition. Community-scale solar plus battery is attractive for local engagement and energy autonomy, but the economics hinge entirely on grant support and subsidised capital. The 10.5 MWh battery, equivalent to roughly 90 minutes of full-output storage, cannot firm the grid overnight or across weather systems. At utility scale, that storage-to-generation ratio is the cost problem Energy Realism tracks: adding enough battery to make solar reliable pushes total project capital beyond what the market will sustain without government transfer payments.

What it means

Community ownership is genuine value where it builds social licence and local benefit-sharing. It is not, however, a substitute for the physics of firm power. Projects of this type depend on ongoing subsidies, shrinking as government budgets tighten. Australia's transition relies increasingly on projects that cannot stand alone economically, and that cannot yet provide the dispatchable capacity a 24/7 grid demands. This is not a story of failure, but a snapshot of unresolved cost and reliability pressure passing to taxpayers.
