Waratah Super Battery completed its second successful test of full System Integrity Protection Services (SIPS) capability on 11 September 2026. The unit discharged at around 700 MW for roughly two hours in the early afternoon, then charged at close to its full 850 MW load capacity in the late afternoon. This follows a first successful SIPS test three days earlier. The dual tests suggest the facility is moving toward commercial operation.
Where this fits
This is a reliability story. SIPS is the last-resort mechanism that keeps the grid from collapse when frequency drops sharply. A battery that can reliably inject 700 MW on demand is a material asset for system security. However, it also exposes a hard constraint: Waratah is a single point of failure, and its discharge window is measured in hours, not days. This is exactly the firming problem that a renewables-heavy grid faces at scale. A single large battery meeting one jurisdiction's contingency requirement does not resolve the need for firm, dispatchable generation that can run for days.
What it means
Waratah's readiness is good news for near-term grid stability. It will absorb some of the volatility that solar and wind inject. But it does not change the arithmetic. Australia still needs sufficient firm capacity to supply demand through multi-day low-wind, low-solar events without rationing. A battery measured in gigawatt-hours, not gigawatt-days, cannot replace coal plant retirements one-for-one. Grid planners must account for this gap in the budget. Reliable grids need both fast response and sustained supply.
