Wongalee wind energy project secures EPBC approval

Wongalee wind energy project has received federal environmental approval under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act, clearing a major hurdle toward financial close and construction.

Where this fits

Another utility-scale wind project moving toward deployment is a data point on Australia's renewable build rate. The story carries no detail on capacity, transmission connection, or firming assumptions, which is typical: individual wind approvals are reported as progress milestones without naming the whole-system cost. Wongalee advances the renewables-heavy grid pathway. That pathway depends on gas peaking plants to cover wind's weather-dependent output, and on a transmission overbuild to move wind from inland sites to load centres. Neither cost is embedded in the project announcement.

What it means

Australia is committing to a grid architecture in which firm power comes from burning gas. That gas is imported, and Australia has no long-term energy security treaty with a supplier. Each new wind project increases the share of weather-dependent generation, raising the duty cycle on firming gas and the cost of standby capacity. The alternative, firm, low-emissions, low-material nuclear generation, remains legally barred. Wongalee is sound infrastructure in its own right. It is also another incremental choice to build reliability through gas dependence rather than through energy density, at a moment when energy security is becoming a national security issue.

The bigger picture

Energy security is national security. This connects to the wider case at Unprepared: Australia's dependence on a strategic rival, and how ready it is for the world that is coming.
