Kairos completes first phase of testing in ETU 3 reactor mockup

Kairos Power has completed initial testing of ETU 3, a non-nuclear mockup of the reactor cavity for its Hermes 2 demonstration plant at Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The test validated the design of precast concrete shielding and remote handling systems for maintenance and component replacement. The shielding panels were made using 3D-printed polymer composite forms developed with Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Kairos is running three reactor demonstration units in parallel: Hermes 1, a non-electricity-producing scaled reactor already under construction, and Hermes 2, a full demonstration plant for which ground was broken in April on a former gaseous diffusion plant site.
Where this fits
This is a data point in the engineering of firm, low-emission generation at pace. Fluoride salt-cooled high-temperature reactors (KP-FHR) operate at higher temperatures than light-water reactors, enabling process heat and electricity from a single unit and widening the end-use case for nuclear beyond grid power. The modular design and remote-handling concept tested here speak directly to operational cost and vessel longevity, two of the material cost drivers in nuclear deployment. Australia has banned nuclear generation by law. This work is happening in the United States; Australia is watching from the sidelines.
What it means
If advanced reactors like the KP-FHR prove economic and reliable in demonstration, they represent an alternative to the renewables-plus-gas path Australia is committed to. That path incurs transmission overbuild, weather-dependent curtailment, battery and mineral supply-chain dependence on China, and sustained gas consumption for firming. A firm, energy-dense alternative with low lifecycle emissions and long asset life is being developed offshore. Australia's legal ban on nuclear generation means this option remains foreclosed, regardless of cost or performance data that emerges from Hermes 1 and 2.
