South Korean manufacturer Doosan Enerbility has secured a deal to produce NuScale small modular reactors (SMRs). NuScale is a US-based company developing factory-built reactors in the 77 MW range. The deal positions Doosan as a manufacturing partner for international deployment. No timeline or production volume was specified in the announcement.

Where this fits

This signals movement toward distributed, firm power manufacturing outside China's supply chain. Unlike solar panels and battery cells, where China controls 80+ per cent of global production capacity, reactor manufacturing is returning to allied economies with nuclear expertise. SMRs are relevant to Australia's grid because they can serve regional loads and industrial heat without the decade-plus lead times and capital intensity of large reactors. The deal does not solve Australia's immediate generation gap, but it demonstrates that an alternative to weather-dependent renewables and their material dependence on Chinese processing exists and is consolidating manufacturing partnerships.

What it means

For Australia, this matters if nuclear law changes. Today, Australia is banned from building any reactor, large or small, leaving SMRs theoretical. The country remains committed to a renewables-plus-gas pathway that outsources panel, battery and inverter production to China while burning more gas for firming than a firm baseload source would require. If Australia's parliament lifts the nuclear ban, Doosan or similar partners could supply domestically-built or pre-manufactured SMRs. Until then, Australia watches allied economies secure manufacturing capability while the grid stays locked into weather dependence and mineral-supply chains controlled by a strategic rival.
