The truth about energy prices (in 13 charts) - AFR

The Australian Financial Review published a multi-chart analysis of energy price movements. The article examined the drivers of retail electricity costs across the National Electricity Market over recent years, drawing on publicly available pricing data and wholesale market trends.

Where this fits

This analysis lands on the cost pillar of the Energy Realism frame. Australia's electricity prices have risen sharply through the transition to renewables, and the article documents that movement. The causes are material: a renewable grid requires firming infrastructure (gas plants kept running at low utilisation, or battery storage), transmission overbuild to reach windy and sunny zones far from demand, and the security cost of weather-dependent supply. These are the whole-system costs that a per-megawatt-hour comparison of renewables to coal obscures. The price story is also a sovereignty story: the supply chain for panels, inverters, batteries and processed minerals sits in China, locking Australia into dependence on a strategic rival for the hardware of its energy transition.

What it means

Australians are paying the bill for a grid architecture that was never costed honestly. Retail prices reflect not only the cheap commodity cost of renewables but the expensive ancillary burden: firming, backup, transmission, and critical-material supply-chain vulnerability. A firm, energy-dense alternative, nuclear, remains banned by law, foreclosing the option that could deliver low emissions, lower materials demand, supply-chain sovereignty, and a grid that does not require gas backing or weather-dependent volatility. The price charts show the cost of the path taken. They do not quantify the cost of the path foreclosed.

The bigger picture

Energy security is national security. This connects to the wider case at Unprepared: Australia's dependence on a strategic rival, and how ready it is for the world that is coming.
