CATL TENER+ BESS gets global debut while deep interest in TENER Sodium grows

CATL, the Chinese battery manufacturer, unveiled its 9 MWh TENER+ battery storage system at All Energy Melbourne 2026 and promoted its TENER Sodium-ion battery, reporting strong Australian interest in both products.

Where this fits

This is a sovereignty story. Australia's grid firming, the dispatchable power needed to cover the gap when wind and sun do not deliver, is now being sourced from a single Chinese supplier, CATL, which controls roughly 60 percent of global battery manufacturing. The deeper problem: as Australia builds a renewables-only system, it has no alternative source of large-scale, long-duration storage. Gas provides firming now. Batteries provide short-term smoothing. But the only low-emissions firm power source, nuclear, remains banned by law. That leaves Australia dependent on CATL's production capacity, supply-chain choices, pricing discipline, and goodwill through the next two decades.

What it means

Australia is locking in strategic dependence on Beijing's manufacturing base at the moment when energy security is becoming national security. A grid that cannot run without Chinese batteries is a grid that cannot run without Chinese permission. Sodium-ion chemistry may improve cost and supply-chain diversity slightly, sodium is more abundant than lithium, but CATL will remain the gatekeeper. The honest measure of risk: Australia could build firm, low-emission, long-lived nuclear capacity with zero material dependence on China and zero weather variability. Instead, it is building a system that requires perpetual Chinese supply, grid overbuild, and gas backup for reliability. That choice was not made for emissions or cost. It was made by law.

The bigger picture

Energy security is national security. This connects to the wider case at Unprepared: Australia's dependence on a strategic rival, and how ready it is for the world that is coming.
