Up the ante on ambition: $250 million Solar Sunshot Round 3 now open

ARENA has opened a $250 million funding round to support local and international companies developing and manufacturing solar balance-of-plant technologies and deployment systems. Round 3 targets racking, tracking, robotics, automation and prefabrication aimed at ARENA's ultra low-cost solar target: 30 per cent module efficiency at 30 cents per watt by 2030. ARENA expects to fully allocate the $150 million from Round 2 and signals this third round will extend the ambition to work at greater scale.
Where this fits
This is a cost story, and it frames the problem accurately: solar installation speed and balance-of-plant costs remain material blockers to the 30-30-30 target. But the funding targets only part of the system cost equation. It does not address the firming, storage and transmission costs that sit outside the per-watt module price, nor does it touch the supply-chain sovereignty problem. Australia is betting on innovation in deployment robotics while remaining dependent on China for panels, batteries, inverters and processed minerals.
What it means
Faster installation and cheaper racking are genuine gains. But they do not solve the firm-power problem: a grid heavy on weather-dependent solar still needs gas peaking or batteries, and both add whole-system cost not captured in the per-watt target. The round also does not address the strategic dependence on China's manufacturing base, which dominates solar supply globally and will do so through this decade. Speeding up deployment of Chinese-made components at lower cost per unit is progress on one frontier. It is not energy security.
