Federation hawks Qld renewables project as giant wind commitments loom - AFR

The Federation and renewable energy bodies are promoting a Queensland renewables project ahead of what the article describes as "giant wind commitments" coming into force. The story indicates growing momentum for Queensland-based renewable capacity, with political backing at federal and state level and industry support.

Where this fits

This is a cost and transmission story dressed as a capacity story. Every large renewable project in Queensland, and every "giant wind commitment" ahead, requires firming. Wind on the east coast is seasonal and weather-dependent. Gas plants must be built or kept warm to fill the gaps. Transmission must be overbuild to carry intermittent supply to load centres. The article does not quantify the full-system cost: the renewable megawatt-hours are cheap, but the whole-system cost of firm supply, gas, batteries, transmission, is not. This is the pattern: a renewable project is hawked on its nameplate capacity and overnight cost, while the cost of making it reliable and dispatchable is counted elsewhere or not counted at all.

What it means

Queensland is locking in a path of weather-dependent supply, with firming costs rising as gas fleet retirements accelerate and battery costs are discovered to be higher than modelled. The supply chain for panels, inverters, and batteries is China-owned. If renewables alone cannot meet the 24/7 demand curve without massive storage overbuild or overseas firming imports, Australia's energy security rests on Chinese supply or on gas. The alternative, firm, low-material, long-lived nuclear generation, remains legislatively banned. Each new renewable commitment makes that choice narrower.

The bigger picture

Energy security is national security. This connects to the wider case at Unprepared: Australia's dependence on a strategic rival, and how ready it is for the world that is coming.
