A $30 billion-plus artificial intelligence data centre planned for Queensland's Darling Downs has been designed around an operating coal-seam gas well. Anthropic and Singapore-based developer Zerra DC plan a 2.16 gigawatt facility near Dalby, with first-stage completion targeted for 2027. The site sits within an energy precinct holding two large gas-fired power stations (Braemar 1 and 2), a smaller gas plant, and a 110 MW solar farm. The project's development application notes the gas well and nearby generation assets as integral to the proposal's viability. Peak load from the data centre would consume roughly one-fifth of Queensland's summer maximum demand, according to IEEFA. The federal government has signalled an intention to tie new data centre approvals to demonstrable additional power generation.
