Energy industry body calls for overhaul of Australia’s gas reservation scheme - Petroleum Australia

Petroleum Australia has called for an overhaul of Australia's gas reservation scheme, which currently requires liquefied natural gas exporters to reserve a portion of supply for domestic use. The body argues the current settings are constraining gas availability and investment in production capacity needed to meet future demand.

Where this fits

This is a reliability and cost story, not a sovereignty one. Gas is the firm power that backs renewable output when the sun does not shine and the wind does not blow. If reservation policy tightens domestic supply, electricity generators reliant on gas for firming will face higher prices and tighter scheduling. That cost gets buried in the grid. The alternative, reserve less gas for export, keep more at home, trades short-term export revenue for grid stability and cheaper electricity. The tension exposes the real cost of a renewables-heavy grid: it needs gas, lots of it, and policy settings that ensure gas is available at the moment demand peaks.

What it means

Australia is building a grid that depends on weather-dependent supply and therefore on gas as the firm margin. If gas reservation policy fails to keep domestic supply adequate and affordable, grid costs rise and blackout risk grows. Petroleum Australia's push for less reservation may serve export interests, but it works against the grid's need for accessible, affordable gas. The honest position is this: if a renewables-only path is to work, Australia needs enough gas at hand, cheaply, to run whenever the sun sets and the wind stalls. Reservation policy is not optional. It is the price of betting the grid on weather.
