Saltfoss enlists Korean services for MSR development

The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute has signed a technology services contract with Danish molten salt reactor developer Saltfoss worth about USD2.3 million. Over two years, KAERI will provide fuel fabrication, material corrosion testing, and molten salt preprocessing for Saltfoss's seaMSR-100 reactor design. The contract does not transfer KAERI's MSR intellectual property to Saltfoss, but rather supplies research and testing services using KAERI's existing infrastructure and expertise in high-temperature molten salt environments.

Where this fits

This deal sits at the intersection of two pressures on Australia's energy transition. First, it underscores that advanced nuclear development, even in Europe, relies on specialist expertise and infrastructure held by a handful of countries with sustained nuclear programmes. South Korea is one of them; Australia is not. Second, the contract demonstrates that nuclear technology development does not require China's supply chain in the way solar and battery manufacturing does. Nuclear fuel, reactor materials and testing can be sourced from allied technical powers. The seaMSR-100 is a small modular reactor, a technology class that could supply firm dispatchable power at scales suited to remote Australian sites without the land footprint of a renewables-plus-firming build.

What it means

Australia currently has no domestic capacity to test or fabricate advanced nuclear fuels, and no legal pathway to build reactors. The work Saltfoss is contracting to South Korea, materials science, fuel development, certification-grade testing, would need to be repeated by any Australian nuclear operator, or sourced from allied countries. A renewables-only grid avoids this gap by accepting dependence on China for panels, batteries and inverters instead. The choice is not between nuclear dependence and autarky, but between which countries and supply chains Australia trusts for its energy security.
