The Latrobe Valley closures are the visible end-point of Australia's retreat from firm dispatchable power. Victoria is replacing these baseload stations with wind and solar, but the article does not examine what backs up the grid when those sources are not generating. This is the core reliability test: Latrobe's coal plants could run at full capacity 24 hours a day. Their replacement must still satisfy demand at night and during multi-day wind droughts. The cost of that firming, batteries, gas plants kept warm and idle, or transmission to import power from other states, is not a sidecar to the transition. It is the transition.

What it means

Australia is dismantling the power stations it built to be grid-independent and reliable. Those stations are being replaced by assets that are cheap to build but expensive to operate as a system. Victoria now depends on interconnection to New South Wales and South Australia, and on battery storage that does not yet exist at the scale required. This tightens the grid and narrows the margin for supply shock. The speed of Latrobe's exit has not been matched by certainty about what will keep the lights on when the sun sets and the wind stops.
