China’s New Giant Submarine Drone Mothership

China's development of submarine-based drone motherships represents a qualitative shift in PLA naval warfare doctrine toward autonomous swarm tactics, directly challenging Australia's conventional submarine and surface-fleet doctrine and materially compressing the strategic window in which Australia's delayed AUKUS SSN capability (not arriving until ~2035–2040) remains tactically relevant. This advancement also raises the probability that conventional manned submarines and surface combatants will face obsolescence against coordinated uncrewed platforms before Australia's current build strategy matures, amplifying the case for accelerated adoption of autonomous defence systems.
