Marinus Link converter station to begin construction

Construction will begin on the Victorian converter station for Marinus Link at Hazelwood North in the Latrobe Valley. The converter station is a critical component of the interconnector that will carry power between Tasmania and Victoria.
Where this fits
Marinus Link is a textbook case of the transmission overbuild that a renewables-heavy grid demands. The link exists because wind and hydro output in Tasmania does not align with demand in Victoria, and because solar peaks at midday while evening demand peaks hours later. The converter station represents tens of millions in capital cost that would not be needed if Australia had chosen firm, dispatchable generation. It is also a cost borne upfront with no guarantee of full utilisation, since its value depends entirely on weather-dependent supply timing across two states.
What it means
Australia is building a grid that requires massive transmission investment to move weather-dependent power across long distances and smooth out timing mismatches between supply and demand. Each interconnector, converter station, and associated high-voltage line is a bet that the mismatch problem can be solved by geography and scale rather than by firm generation. The result is a system where the cost of reliability is spread across capital-intensive infrastructure rather than embedded in the generation source itself. Australia is also locking in dependence on China for the inverter, converter, and control electronics that make this infrastructure work, while forgoing the one firm, low-emission, domestically-licensable generation path, nuclear, that would reduce both the transmission burden and the strategic exposure.
