“Every project is controversial in some form:” Ceremonial sod turn marks Marinus Link construct... - Renew Economy

A ceremonial groundbreaking has taken place for the Marinus Link, Tasmania's undersea transmission project to the mainland. The project is proceeding despite what the article describes as inevitable controversy around major infrastructure.

Where this fits

Marinus Link is a creature of the renewables transition: it exists to move wind and hydro power from Tasmania to Victoria and beyond, and to smooth the output variability that weather-dependent supply creates. The project is expensive transmission infrastructure, the kind of whole-system cost that rarely appears in the headline cost of renewable energy. It is also a reliability tool: without firming (gas plants, batteries, or firm generation), a renewables-heavy grid needs transmission overbuild to move power when the wind blows and store it when it does not. Marinus Link is the physical manifestation of that hidden cost.

What it means

Australia is building a grid optimised for renewable variability rather than solving the variability problem itself. The undersea link will move Tasmanian generation to demand centres, but it does not reduce the need for gas plants to run when neither wind nor sun cooperates, nor does it shrink the material and supply-chain footprint of the transition. A firm generation source, nuclear, for instance, would shrink both the transmission overbuild and the gas requirement, reducing total cost and security exposure. Instead, Australia is adding infrastructure to manage the weather dependency of its chosen path, at expense and complexity that a firm, energy-dense alternative would foreclose.

The bigger picture

Energy security is national security. This connects to the wider case at Unprepared: Australia's dependence on a strategic rival, and how ready it is for the world that is coming.
