Hitachi Energy delivers giant HumeLink reactors

Hitachi Energy has delivered six 500kV shunt reactors for Transgrid's HumeLink project, a 365km transmission line under construction in New South Wales. The reactors are a critical component in managing reactive power and voltage stability across the link.
Where this fits
HumeLink is a textbook case of the transmission overbuild required to support a renewables-heavy grid. Large-scale solar and wind are geographically dispersed; the wind resource sits in the south and west, demand sits in the cities. Firming capacity, gas plants, batteries, or in principle nuclear, can be built close to load. Renewables cannot. The result is a sprawling, long-distance transmission network that did not exist under coal baseload. Shunt reactors are symptoms of that mismatch: they exist to absorb reactive power created by long transmission runs and inverter-based generation. They are necessary kit, but they are also evidence of infrastructure cost that renewables-only advocates often omit from the whole-system tally.
What it means
HumeLink will cost around $20 billion by completion. It is one of several major transmission projects now underway or planned to move renewable energy from remote generation zones to population centres. Each project adds to the capital bill, the construction timeline, the supply-chain risk, and the land footprint of the energy transition. A dispatchable alternative, nuclear, or fossil with carbon capture, would compress that transmission requirement and lower the materials and land burden. Instead, Australia is locked into a path of building outward, not inward, at a scale and speed that leaves little room for course correction if costs blow out or timelines slip further.
