Victoria continues regional neighbourhood battery rollout

Victoria has opened a 59 kW / 224 kWh neighbourhood battery at Marysville Community Centre as part of its $42 million 100 Neighbourhood Battery Program. The battery pairs with rooftop solar at the site. A total of 139 neighbourhood batteries are planned across 60 council areas in Victoria, with 80 already installed and a combined storage capacity of 23,000 kWh. The state government frames the rollout as lowering bills for community facilities and providing backup power during supply disruptions.

Where this fits

This program exemplifies the hidden cost of a renewables-only grid. Small neighbourhood batteries cannot store power for the multi-day, seasonal gaps that solar and wind create across entire regions. A 224 kWh battery at a community centre is useful for local outages lasting hours, not days. The real work of firming Victoria's grid, covering the renewable shortfalls that drive peak demand in winter and evening, still falls to gas plants and imports. The $42 million spent on 139 batteries does not reduce that need. It addresses a symptom (local resilience) while the backbone of the system remains gas, concealing the true cost of the transition.

What it means

Victoria's electricity system is being built to weather-dependent supply without a firm alternative. Neighbourhood batteries improve community outcomes in outages but do not solve the grid's dependency on gas for firming or on China's battery supply chain for storage hardware. Each battery installed is material and labour locked into a system that still needs dispatchable power. A firm, domestic energy source, nuclear, remains banned by law, foreclosing the option that would provide both reliability and sovereignty at lower whole-system cost.
