Big battery deal that shows Queensland is not a dead zone - AFR

Queensland has secured a large battery storage deal, with the state positioning itself as competitive in the national renewables build-out. The project signals confidence in grid-scale battery deployment as a firming tool alongside wind and solar generation.

Where this fits

This is a reliability story, not a sovereignty one. Big batteries are part of the cost of a renewables-only grid: they sit idle most of the time, generate nothing, and exist purely to bridge the gaps when sun and wind fall short. That cost, capital, labour, land, minerals, is real and is being added to every grid operator's balance sheet. The deal shows Queensland understands it needs firming infrastructure. What it does not show is whether batteries alone, or batteries plus gas, can actually keep the lights on through a multi-day wind drought in winter at the scale the state now demands.

What it means

Battery projects are necessary within a renewables system, but they are a symptom of the problem, not a solution to it. Storing a few hours of output is not the same as firm dispatchable power. Australia is building two energy systems in parallel: renewables that need firming, and the gas plants or batteries that firm them. A single firm source, coal or nuclear, would halve the material and supply-chain burden, and cut the transmission overbuild. Queensland's battery deal proves the state is serious about grid resilience. It also proves how expensive that seriousness has become.
