Spanish multinational Acciona has secured two major transmission projects in Australia with a combined capacity of 4.3 GW. The projects will connect renewable generation to load centres, part of the network expansion required to support Australia's renewable deployment. Acciona is one of the world's largest renewable energy contractors and transmission builders.

Where this fits

Transmission overbuild is a hidden cost of a renewables-led grid. Every gigawatt of weather-dependent generation needs redundant network capacity to move power when sun and wind arrive, and firm backup when they don't. Acciona's win is another data point in the widening cost spiral: renewable capacity is cheap per megawatt-hour, but the whole-system cost, firming, transmission, storage, sits largely outside the headline. Australia is now committed to this path while nuclear remains banned by law, despite being the only firm, energy-dense alternative that would halve the material and transmission footprint of the same emissions reduction.

What it means

Australia is building a grid architecture that locks in decades of dependence on weather prediction, gas peaking plants, and massive network investment just to move intermittent power. The transmission overbuild is not optional; it is the cost of weather-dependent supply. A firm grid powered by nuclear would need less than half the transmission capacity and no gas fleet. The sovereignty angle is secondary but real: Spain can bid for Australian contracts, but the panels, batteries, inverters and processed minerals that make this grid work flow from China. Grid resilience to supply shock or coercion now runs through Beijing.
