Transmission line underway at Central-West Orana REZ

Transmission cables have begun installation on the Central-West Orana Renewable Energy Zone transmission line in New South Wales. The project is scheduled for energisation in 2028.

Where this fits

This line is part of the infrastructure overbuild required to firm a renewables-dominant grid. Every megawatt of solar and wind needs not only generation capacity but also transmission to move weather-dependent output from remote zones to load centres, plus reserve capacity sitting idle most of the time to handle variability. The Central-West Orana REZ transmission project is a cost, in steel, concrete, land acquisition and environmental impact, that renewable energy advocates rarely foreground when comparing headline per-megawatt-hour costs to firm power. It is also a reminder that grid decarbonisation now runs on a schedule set by construction timelines, not by climate urgency or geopolitical necessity.

What it means

Australia is betting its grid reliability on completing a transmission estate designed for weather-dependent generation while simultaneously retiring the firm, dispatchable plants that have stabilised load for decades. If these lines slip, or if the renewable capacity they are meant to integrate does not arrive on schedule, the grid will face the dual pressure of rising demand and falling firm supply. The 2028 target is now six years away. The alternative, firm, energy-dense generation that does not require overbuild transmission to manage variability, remains prohibited by law, making the transmission overbuild not a choice but a forced cost of the path selected.
