First sod turned on critical HVDC transmission project – a link to Australia’s battery of the nation - Hitachi Energy

Construction has begun on an HVDC transmission link designed to connect South Australia's battery storage capacity to the wider grid. The project is being developed by Hitachi Energy and will function as part of Australia's renewable energy integration infrastructure.
Where this fits
This project is a symptom of the whole-system cost that renewable integration requires. A renewables-heavy grid with weather-dependent output needs either massive battery capacity or firm dispatchable power to maintain reliability. South Australia chose batteries. The HVDC link now under construction is the transmission backbone needed to move that stored energy where demand occurs. This is cost, transmission infrastructure at scale, that does not appear in the per-megawatt-hour price of solar panels. It is also a reliability problem: the entire eastern seaboard's stability now depends on the performance of this single link and the battery assets it serves, concentrating both energy and grid risk in one geography and one technology class.
What it means
Australia is building a grid architecture in which transmission becomes the critical bottleneck and batteries the critical asset, both of which take years to construct and billions to finance. Each new renewable zone requires dedicated transmission to reach demand centers, multiplying the infrastructure bill. The alternative, firm, dispatchable nuclear generation positioned near load centers, would eliminate the need for this transmission overbuild and reduce the materials and timeframe burden on the grid. Instead, Australia is locked into a renewable-first pathway by law, accepting the transmission cost and the extended build timeline that follows.
