First transmission lines strung on Central-West Orana REZ project in New South Wales - ACCIONA | Australia

ACCIONA has begun stringing transmission lines for the Central-West Orana Renewable Energy Zone in New South Wales. The REZ is designed to connect new wind and solar farms to the grid and move their output to load centres. The project is part of the broader build-out of transmission infrastructure that the national electricity market operator, AEMO, has identified as necessary to support the transition to renewables-heavy generation.

Where this fits

Transmission overbuild is a hidden cost of a renewables-only grid that cost comparisons routinely skip. Solar and wind are intermittent. When the sun sets or wind drops, that capacity sits idle. To maintain reliability, the system must either build redundant transmission to move renewable output across long distances when it is available, or build storage and firming capacity. Australia is choosing transmission and gas. The Central-West Orana lines represent the capital cost, the land footprint, and the years of development delay that a firm, energy-dense alternative like nuclear would avoid. Transmission sits on the books as network cost, diffused across consumers, not attributed to renewables in headlines about "cheap solar".

What it means

Australia is locked into a decade-long transmission build that locks in dependence on gas for firming and locks out the one low-emission firm alternative that law forbids. The physical infrastructure now under construction reflects policy choices made years ago. By the time these lines are live and the pattern is clear, high whole-system cost, weather-dependent output, perpetual gas burn, no sovereignty over the battery and panel supply chain, the grid architecture will be set. Nuclear remains banned. Energy security is being traded for the appearance of speed.

The bigger picture

Energy security is national security. This connects to the wider case at Unprepared: Australia's dependence on a strategic rival, and how ready it is for the world that is coming.
