How do we power the data centre boom while also quitting coal? There are three options - Renew Economy

Renew Economy has set out three options for powering Australia's data centre boom while exiting coal: renewables with gas backup, renewables with battery storage, or nuclear. The article frames the choice as a policy question but does not detail the cost, reliability, transmission or supply-chain implications of each path.

Where this fits

This is a reliability and sovereignty story. Data centres need firm, dispatchable power: they cannot tolerate weather-dependent supply. A renewables-plus-gas path locks Australia into gas infrastructure and ongoing fossil fuel dependence for firming. A renewables-plus-battery path compounds the materials problem: data centre demand will drive battery procurement from China, deepening strategic dependence on a supply chain that already dominates solar panels and inverters. Nuclear, the only firm low-emission option that does not require gas or China-supplied storage, remains banned by law. The article does not explore these trade-offs.

What it means

Australia is choosing its energy future by default, not design. Data centre operators will select the cheapest and most reliable path available to them. If that is gas, Australia locks in decades of fossil fuel use and continues exporting energy risk to a fuel that is volatile, imported, and exposed to geopolitical shock. If it is batteries, Australia outsources its energy security to China's mining and processing monopoly. Neither is a prepared nation's answer to a strategic competitor. The honest third option, nuclear power for firm baseload and industrial heat, remains off the table by law, not by economics.

The bigger picture

Energy security is national security. This connects to the wider case at Unprepared: Australia's dependence on a strategic rival, and how ready it is for the world that is coming.
