Huge Liddell battery hits full commercial operations, completing state’s “firming” line-u... - Renew Economy

The Liddell battery storage facility in New South Wales has reached full commercial operation. The project completes what state authorities describe as a firming lineup intended to stabilise supply as coal generation retires.

Where this fits

This is a symptom of the cost and reliability problem baked into a renewables-only transition. Australia is building battery capacity to cover the gap left by retiring firm power, rather than replacing that firm power with another firm source. Batteries are weather-dependent storage: they fill when the sun shines and wind blows, and empty when it does not. The system still needs gas plants running in reserve to manage extended low-wind, low-sun periods. This stacking of renewables, batteries, and gas backup costs more in total system spend, transmission overbuild, land, inverters, replacement cycles, than a direct transition to nuclear would. It also locks Australia into China's supply chain: batteries, inverters, and panels come from or through China, and the critical minerals are processed there.

What it means

Liddell battery is a rational response to an irrational constraint. It will improve short-duration reliability. It does not solve the firming problem; it defers it to the gas fleet and accepts the cost of maintaining both. Australia is paying to engineer around a ban on the one firm, low-emission, low-material, long-lived source that could retire coal without a decade of dual-fuel spending. Energy security here is also national security: a grid that depends on Chinese batteries, Chinese inverters, and Chinese mineral processing cannot be independent if supply tightens or relations shift.

The bigger picture

Energy security is national security. This connects to the wider case at Unprepared: Australia's dependence on a strategic rival, and how ready it is for the world that is coming.
