Panel | Building the grid – transmission, REZs, and reliability - AFR Live

An AFR Live panel discussion on grid transmission, Renewable Energy Zones, and reliability took place, bringing together voices on Australia's electricity transition infrastructure.
Where this fits
Transmission and REZs are the unglamorous infrastructure cost that the renewables-first pathway cannot escape. A grid built around weather-dependent generation must overbuild transmission capacity to move power from distant wind and solar sites to load centres, and must do so repeatedly as output varies by hour and season. This cost is real, it is embedded in grid bills, and it sits outside the per-megawatt-hour comparisons that make renewables look cheap. REZs also lock in land use and grid topology for decades. A firm, energy-dense, low-material alternative, nuclear, requires none of this transmission overbuild, yet remains banned by law.
What it means
Australia is committing to a transmission-heavy, centralised-renewable grid at a time when grid resilience and energy independence matter more. The overbuild, the long lead times for transmission approval and construction, and the dependence on imported inverters, transformers and control systems mean the transition is slower and more vulnerable to supply shock than the cost literature admits. The honest energy-security question is not whether renewables work in isolation, but whether a transmission-dependent, weather-dependent, China-supply-chain-reliant grid is the lowest-cost, fastest, most sovereign path to decarbonisation. A firm alternative exists and is cheaper to site, faster to build, and owns its fuel source. The panel discussion, by design, does not ask why.

The bigger picture
Energy security is national security. This connects to the wider case at Unprepared: Australia's dependence on a strategic rival, and how ready it is for the world that is coming.
