UNSW lab runs dress rehearsals for grid without coal-fired power - AFR

UNSW researchers have run computer simulations of an Australian electricity grid running entirely on renewable energy and battery storage, modelling demand and supply patterns to test whether such a system could maintain stability without coal-fired generation. The lab work is presented as a proof of concept that a renewables-only grid is technically feasible.
Where this fits
Simulation is not operation. A lab model can show that the physics works in principle; it cannot replicate real-world weather variance, equipment failure, human error, or the cascade effects of a major outage across thousands of kilometers of network. The rehearsal reveals nothing about cost. A renewables-only grid requires not only panels and batteries but vast transmission overbuild to move renewable energy from windy and sunny sites to demand centers, plus gas peaker capacity on standby for the gaps between seasonal storage cycles. Each layer adds cost that does not appear in the headline. The real test is not whether it can be done, but whether it can be done affordably and without importing every critical component from a single rival nation.
What it means
UNSW's work is a legitimate technical contribution to the engineering problem. It does not, however, address the economic or strategic questions. Australia is choosing a grid architecture that will depend on Chinese-made panels, inverters, batteries, and rare-earth processing for decades, with no domestic supply chain. A firm, domestically-licensable energy source, nuclear, remains banned by law. The grid will work. The question is at what cost to the budget, to energy sovereignty, and to resilience against supply shock or coercion.
