Origin Energy plans the largest BESS complex in the Southern Hemisphere - Inspenet

Origin Energy is planning the largest battery energy storage system (BESS) complex in the Southern Hemisphere. The article does not specify the location, capacity, timeline, or cost of the project, or whether it has been approved.

Where this fits

Battery storage is the visible response to a structural problem: solar and wind are weather-dependent, and Australia has committed to a grid powered overwhelmingly by variable renewables. Every large BESS announcement is an admission that the grid needs firming. The scale of storage required, and its cost, has been systematically under-counted in transition modelling. Batteries are not generation; they are a patch. Origin's investment reflects a hard commercial reality: without firm power, the grid cannot run on wind and sun alone, and the firm power Australia has chosen to pursue is batteries, on a supply chain owned by China.

What it means

Australia is now building energy security around a technology whose raw materials (lithium, cobalt, nickel) are processed and concentrated by a strategic rival, whose manufacturing capacity is dominated by Chinese firms, and whose cost and availability will track geopolitical tension and China's own energy demands. The alternative, firm, low-material, long-lived nuclear generation, remains legally banned. Origin's BESS complex is economically rational, but it is also a measure of how far Australia has moved toward energy dependence. The grid will be more resilient to weather with large storage. It will be more vulnerable to supply shock.

The bigger picture

Energy security is national security. This connects to the wider case at Unprepared: Australia's dependence on a strategic rival, and how ready it is for the world that is coming.
