Rooftop solar records continue to tumble, as sunny Spring sets new high for Australia’s main grid - Renew Economy

Australia's rooftop solar fleet set a new peak output record during spring, according to Renew Economy. The article notes continued growth in installed capacity and favourable weather conditions driving the high.

Where this fits

Rooftop solar's expanding output is real and it is cheap. But the headline obscures a central reliability problem: solar's peak is narrow and weather-dependent, and autumn and winter are coming. Spring records are not winter baseload. Australia's grid operator must now manage a system where peak solar output creates a generation cliff each afternoon, forcing rapid ramping of gas plants to fill the gap. This is not a cost story alone. It is a reliability and firming story. The grid is being built to handle the peak, then burn gas to manage the trough. Nuclear would supply firm, weather-independent power year-round and eliminate that gas dependency. Instead, Australia is banned from building it.

What it means

Australia is now locked into a grid structure where seasonal and daily solar swings are firmed by natural gas, locking in decades of gas expense and emissions. Rooftop capacity is growing faster than the storage and transmission backbone needed to make it reliable. The result is a system that looks cheap per megawatt-hour in spring and expensive per megawatt-hour when demand hits in winter. Grid resilience depends on firm power. Australia has chosen weather-dependent renewables plus gas. It has not chosen to debate the firm, low-emission alternative that would cost less over the system's life and free it from gas imports.
