An initial look at the current testing schedule, for NSW1-SA1

Project Energy Connect, the 330 kilometre high-voltage transmission link between New South Wales and South Australia, began live operation on Thursday 1 October 2026. The network is undergoing a phased testing regime. The first phase, running until 31 January 2027, will test the line at 150 megawatts. From 1 February to 30 June 2027, testing moves to 350 megawatts. The final phase, from 1 July to 30 November 2027, will operate at the full intended capacity of 550 megawatts.
Where this fits
This interconnector exemplifies the transmission overbuild required to support a renewables-dominant grid. PEC exists to move weather-dependent generation from one state to another, filling the gaps when local sun and wind falter. The protracted testing schedule, sixteen months to reach full capacity, underscores a core cost burden: firm dispatchable power would require no such sprawling transmission infrastructure, no interstate congestion management, and no billions in sunk capital waiting on meteorological variability.
What it means
Australia is locking in a grid architecture built around renewable intermittency rather than firm generation. Every month PEC remains below capacity costs the economy in lost arbitrage, higher ancillary service costs, and continued reliance on gas peaking plants. When the line finally reaches full operation late this year, it will still only move power when the sun shines and wind blows somewhere along the corridor. The grid remains hostage to weather. A nuclear baseload fleet would retire this entire class of transmission problem, freeing capital for resilience instead of remediation.
