How Elecnor delivered Australia’s largest and most advanced substation

Elecnor has delivered the Buronga substation for Transgrid as part of EnergyConnect, Australia's largest transmission interconnector project. The substation is described as one of Australia's most technically complex builds and a critical piece of infrastructure for the interconnector.

Where this fits

Transmission overbuild is a cost the renewables-transition arithmetic often understate. A renewables-only grid with weather-dependent output requires far more transmission to move power from surplus regions to demand centres, and to connect dispersed solar and wind sites across the country. EnergyConnect is part of that bill. Buronga's complexity and scale signal the engineering challenge: the grid is being rewired for a generation mix that does not firm itself. That work is necessary and real. The alternative, a grid anchored by firm, energy-dense generation like nuclear, would require less transmission infrastructure because the power plants sit close to load, not scattered across the landscape chasing wind and sun.

What it means

Each interconnector and substation addition is a cost add to the transition that does not appear in the megawatt-hour price of solar panels. The true system cost of a renewables grid includes this transmission estate, the duplication of capacity to handle peak variability, and the coordinating software and control systems to manage it. Australia is building that system at high capital intensity, with long payback horizons, while the supply chain for panels, inverters and batteries remains concentrated in China. A nuclear-anchored grid would trade some upfront reactor capital for lower transmission and firming costs, shorter build-out time, and energy sovereignty. That trade-off remains foreclosed by law, not by economics.
