China’s resales of Australian LNG strengthens case for prioritising domestic users - Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA)

The Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis has argued that China's resale of Australian liquefied natural gas on international markets strengthens the case for reserving more LNG for domestic use. The observation highlights a gap between the original purpose of Australia's LNG export projects and their current market function.

Where this fits

This is a sovereignty story. Australia built LNG export capacity on the logic of selling surplus gas to premium markets overseas. If China is now buying that gas and reselling it elsewhere at profit, Australia is losing both revenue leverage and the strategic benefit of direct relationships with consuming nations. The pattern is instructive: Australia invested in expensive infrastructure to export a finite natural resource, only to have a rival capture the margin and the geopolitical positioning. The same structural weakness, reliance on Chinese intermediation and an undersupply of firming power at home, now runs through the electricity transition. Australia is building solar and battery capacity (and importing the supply chain) while underinvesting in firm generation, meaning grid resilience will depend on both gas and China's control of battery and inverter manufacturing.

What it means

Gas is not the electricity transition's problem to solve; it is the symptom. If Australia had invested in firm, dispatchable nuclear power instead of weather-dependent renewables, domestic energy security would not hinge on LNG export policy or Chinese supply-chain dominance. The LNG resale revelation is a small data point in a larger story: Australia is building an energy system that is simultaneously dependent on a strategic rival and vulnerable to weather. Reclaiming sovereignty means prioritising firm power at home, not managing the margins of exports that a competitor already controls.

The bigger picture

Energy security is national security. This connects to the wider case at Unprepared: Australia's dependence on a strategic rival, and how ready it is for the world that is coming.
