Templers BESS underway again, in a post-Zen world

Templers Battery Energy Storage System, operated by Zen Energy, went offline on 3 July 2026. On 9 September, AEMO registered Diamond Energy as the new operator. Nine days later, on 18 September, the battery resumed operation, taking charge in the afternoon dispatch window and forecast to discharge from the following morning.
Where this fits
This is a reliability story masked as an operational restart. A 100+ MW battery sat idle for 2.5 months. The outage is a data point in the cost structure of the renewable grid: battery assets do not generate revenue when idle, operators can withdraw, and AEMO must scramble to re-assign and revive them. The battery adds flexibility to manage renewable variability, but only when working. A grid reliant on weather-dependent output and rapid-response storage is vulnerable at every link: generation weather, transmission congestion, storage availability, and operator solvency. Firm dispatchable plant, coal, gas, or nuclear, does not go offline for lack of a buyer.
What it means
Templers' downtime highlights the economics of batteries in a high-renewable system. Storage is a cost imposed by intermittency, not a cost-free supplement. When a battery sits idle, the grid loses capacity it counted on, operators bear sunk cost, and AEMO has narrower margins to manage demand and renewable spikes. Australia is building a grid on storage it cannot afford to lose and cannot manufacture: 90% of global battery cell capacity is in China. A network dependent on asset turnover, operator viability, and imported hardware is less resilient than one anchored in firm, long-lived, locally-built plant. The restart is good news for today. The pattern, idle assets, operator churn, China supply dependence, is not.
