How Clean Energy Link – East is supporting WA’s coal phase-out - Energy Magazine

Western Australia is retiring coal generation and building renewable capacity backed by a new transmission link, Clean Energy Link, East, to connect variable solar and wind output across the state's power system.

Where this fits

This is a reliability story masquerading as a phase-out story. WA's coal exit is real, but the article does not address the core engineering problem: solar and wind are weather-dependent, and a state-wide transmission overbuild does not solve that. Clean Energy Link, East moves electrons around. It does not firm supply when the sun sets or wind drops. That firming will come from gas generation or storage, neither of which is free, and both of which add to the whole-system cost that renewable-only advocates do not routinely count. The alternative, firm, low-material, low-emission nuclear, remains banned by law. Australia is trading a retiring coal fleet for a gas-backed renewables fleet, at higher total cost, under a China-dependent supply chain for panels and batteries.

What it means

WA's coal phase-out is being solved by transmission infrastructure and variable generation, a pattern now standard across the grid: build more wires and more panels, accept that firm power must come from gas, and hope battery costs keep falling. That hope is real but fragile. If battery costs plateau, or if China's rare-earth or polysilicon supply tightens, the cost of this transition accelerates. It also locks Australia into gas for decades. A firm alternative, new-build nuclear, could phase out coal without gas dependence, with lower lifecycle emissions and a sovereign fuel supply. That option is not on the table.

The bigger picture

Energy security is national security. This connects to the wider case at Unprepared: Australia's dependence on a strategic rival, and how ready it is for the world that is coming.
