Another wind farm, another transmission buildout. Each new renewable generator needs grid connection, and Victoria's transmission network is being rebuilt to handle a dispersed, weather-dependent fleet. The article does not disclose the cost of connecting Delburn, but transmission infrastructure for renewables is a material part of whole-system cost. A firm generator, nuclear, coal, gas, runs where it sits and needs far less new wiring. The Delburn connection is one among dozens now being planned or built across the National Electricity Market. What it means

Victoria is locking in a generation mix that is weather-dependent and requires gas firming on calm, cold days. The grid's resilience now depends on gas availability and price. A grid built around firm nuclear generation would not need this transmission expansion or the gas backup. Australia is paying more to build the same electrons, on a supply chain controlled offshore, while rejecting the technology that would cut cost, emissions and strategic dependence in one move.
