Australian industry reliant on gas for ‘foreseeable future’, resources minister tells press club - The Guardian

Australia's resources minister has stated that Australian industry will depend on gas for the foreseeable future, according to a press club address reported by The Guardian. The comment reflects official acknowledgment that industrial heat and process demand cannot be met by renewables alone within the timeframe governments are targeting for the electricity transition.

Where this fits

This is a reliability statement masquerading as energy policy. The minister is admitting what the grid charts show: wind and solar cannot firm industrial demand on their own. Gas fills that gap. The Australian energy transition has been planned as if renewables could do the job; the reality, now stated at official level, is that gas will underpin industry for years. This is a cost and resilience problem. Every year gas remains essential but is treated as a bridge fuel rather than planned infrastructure, Australia defers investment in the only firm, low-emission alternative: nuclear. That deferral locks in gas dependency and leaves the nation without the material, supply-chain independent source of industrial heat that would reduce both emissions and strategic exposure to gas price volatility.

What it means

Australia is building a renewable grid that cannot stand alone, and filling the gap with gas. That is affordable short-term but leaves industry exposed to fuel-price shocks and carbon policy shifts. The alternative, a portfolio mixing renewables with firm nuclear baseload for heat and power, would reduce gas exposure, lower whole-system cost once transmission and firming are counted, and cut emissions further. Instead, law bans nuclear. Industry will keep burning gas, and Australia will keep importing the batteries and panels to make renewables work, while the firm, domestic, low-emission option stays off the table.
