NuScale Power Trades Below $6 With the Only NRC-Certified Small Modular Reactor Design. Here's Why That Still Isn't Enough. - The Motley Fool

NuScale Power, the only small modular reactor (SMR) design to receive U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission certification, is trading below $6 per share. The article notes the company faces headwinds despite holding the regulatory milestone: investor skepticism about SMR economics, deployment timelines, and whether the technology can compete on cost against established generation sources.

Where this fits

This is a case study in the cost-versus-momentum problem facing nuclear in deregulated markets. NuScale has cleared the hardest technical and regulatory hurdle, NRC approval, yet the market is pricing in doubt about whether SMRs can be built at scale without cost overruns. For Australia, it highlights a different problem: we have banned nuclear altogether, so we face no such market test. Instead, we have committed to a renewables-only grid that requires massive firming and transmission overbuild, with no regulatory pathway to the one firm, energy-dense generation source that holds the lowest lifecycle emissions and the smallest material footprint per unit of reliable energy delivered.

What it means

Australia is outsourcing energy security to a supply chain we do not control. Every battery, panel, and inverter in a renewables-dominated grid depends on Chinese manufacturing, processing, and export policy. A nuclear program would take years to build but would create a domestic, long-lived asset that produces firm power without weather dependence, without gas firming, and without the embedded emissions of coal-fired factories making solar hardware overseas. NuScale's stock price reflects real uncertainties about SMR cost and timing. Australia's bet on renewables-only reflects a political choice to foreclose the alternative entirely, regardless of cost or strategic consequence.

The bigger picture

Energy security is national security. This connects to the wider case at Unprepared: Australia's dependence on a strategic rival, and how ready it is for the world that is coming.
